Creative Writing – Talent vs Skill

What is creative writing?

Creative writing is a part of the art.

The writing is done in a way that is not academic or technical but still attracts an audience.  For example food recipe, newsletter article can’t be a part of creative writing. Because here, the author is not expressing his emotions, feelings. The author of the news article is bringing facts, even though they can be very entertaining. The main purpose of the author is to give you interesting information/news. These writers are not allowed to express even their opinions, the author must be neutral, have distance. And that’s also making sense. You don’t want to read an article that your favorite politician just wins the elections with some rude comment of the biased writer.

Here we have different types where we can include creative writing:

  • Poetry
  • Plays
  • Movie and television scripts
  • Fiction (novels, novellas, and short stories)
  • Songs
  • Speeches
  • Memoirs
  • Personal essays

Destroy your life; then put it back together. You'll get great material, meet some fascinating characters and – side benefit – the skills you develop will give you greater compassion, insight and range with the people you create on the page – or run into off of it.

Talent vs Skill

Creative writing teachers usually smile on their lips and saying: “Writing is 5% of talent and 95% of work.” But is that true? Maybe you know there’s something inside you. Possibly you hear that from your family, friends. But you know, people can be wrong …

is the mysterious abstract trait what some of us has inside. It is something that is just going naturally for us. We don’t have to think about it. For example portrait painter. Some of them could paint in the age of 10 years realistic portraits of their favorite actor, singer or just someone from their life. They do not have to think about lights, shadows, lines, 3D composition, perspective or any other very important rules to have successful artwork. And some of us has to study x years to get on their level. To get the perception. To understand how everything works. That is the advantage of talent.

The talent for writers

is having the feeling for words, to be able to express beautifully, naturally, not like a robot.  Something like a talent, of course, exists and it is known by the fact that the read text does not sound like a cloud of random sounds, words, and sentences, but as a coherent story that awakens emotions in the reader. Simple words are metamorphosed in much higher and more advanced whole, in a story that we do not perceive only by the logical part of ourselves like we read cake recipes or timetables.

Many people have the talent for creative writing, sometimes they don’t know about it, very often they do not care. Unluckily, talent is a gift. It is something that we cannot learn. On the other hand…

is an attribute what we can learn and improve.  Creative writing can be taught. Of course, if you have problems with grammar, you should first start there before you will head to next level. You can study this subject at schools, universities, online, courses and many other places. But the most important thing, in this case, is just writing, writing, writing and reading. That is how you can become better. That is how you can after some time notice the changes in your writing. If you don’t have the talent you probably will need help also with the perception of details or expressions.

Write or not?

Do you love to write? But you think that you don’t have it inside of you? I would say go for it. Then study, write, read. There are many authors who were not talented and with hard work, they are very successful. And there are also many people with talent who are just wasting it. There is one thing you should be aware of – do not write for money or fame and do not expect to be the second Jules Verne. Miracles can happen but stay on the ground.

Because I think you can do everything with hard work and believes in your heart.
